Art Therapy is a psychodynamic creative therapy which can help children, adolescents and adults.
When is art therapy helpful?
- To support those who have communication difficulties and learning needs
- To help those with neurodiversity such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder
- To support people experiencing emotional difficulties, such as bereavement and loss
- To address anxiety, depression and other specific mental health issues
- To gain clarity and move forward following trauma and / or adverse childhood experiences
- To improve self-esteem and personal well-being
- Some people simply use art therapy as a way of exploring themselves in a non-judgmental space while extending their creativity. It is also helpful for enhancing wellbeing
Individual Art Therapy usually takes place once a week at the same time with the same Art Therapist. Sessions are between 50-60 minutes long and may continue for several weeks or for a year or more. We also provide therapy for trainee therapists.
As well as individual art therapy, we also facilitate group art therapy when this is commissioned by an organisation.
Art therapy groups in schools offer an opportunity for children who are experiencing particular difficulties to be referred by staff in consultation with parents/carers. The focus for referral may be on behaviour, relationships, learning issues or specific emotional challenges.
Adult groups can either be attended consistently over a period of weeks or with optional attendance as agreed at the start. Groups can run for eight to twelve weeks or can be a one-off session or an introductory event. The use of art materials alongside others and reflecting on the outcomes together provides a calming and supportive way of sharing feelings and ideas, contributing to wellbeing.
Online art therapy is also available. Please see our page on this.
Supervision: We can provide clinical supervision for practising therapists and trainees either face to face or online.
Fees for our services An Art Therapy session is charged at £70 for a 50-60 minutes for adults, and 45-50 minutes for younger children. Concessions are available and can be discussed with your therapist.
